Our Story
Stone by the Sea was founded by Devon Lorenzen, who grew up in Ontario and began her masonry apprenticeship in Calgary in 2013. After nearly a decade cutting her teeth on Alberta's harsh-climate stonework, Devon moved west to Vancouver Island and built a studio that respects both the material and the land it sits upon.
Every stone we source is selected by hand — from local Vancouver Island quarries and riverbeds where possible — because we believe the character of a place should live in the walls of its buildings.
Our small crew of four craftsmen handle no more than six projects at a time. That's a deliberate choice. It means your project receives our full attention, from the first sketch on a napkin to the last trowel of mortar.
Devon or a senior craftsman is on every site, every day.
We source Vancouver Island stone wherever the project allows.
Structural masonry warranted for the life of the building.
Portfolio
Two decades of projects across Vancouver Island — each one a collaboration between our craftsmen, the client, and the stone itself.
What Clients Say
Devon and her team built us a retaining wall and flagstone patio that looks like it's been there for a hundred years. The craftsmanship is extraordinary — every stone chosen with care. We get compliments from every visitor.
We had a heritage stone foundation that needed careful restoration. Stone by the Sea matched the original lime mortar perfectly and treated the old stones with the respect they deserved. Flawless work.
Our outdoor fireplace is the heart of our property now. Devon walked us through every stone option, explained what would work best with our coastal exposure, and delivered something more beautiful than we imagined.
FAQ

Ask Us DirectlyYes — we take projects from Victoria in the south to Port Hardy in the north, including the Gulf Islands. Travel time is factored into our quotes for remote locations.
A standard patio or retaining wall takes 1–3 weeks on-site. A fireplace is usually 1–2 weeks. Heritage restoration work varies considerably. We provide a detailed schedule before any work begins.
We work with virtually all natural stone — local Vancouver Island granite and sandstone, imported limestone and slate, river cobble, fieldstone, and reclaimed heritage stone. We can also advise on manufactured stone veneers when appropriate.
Yes. We include a detailed design consultation and hand-drawn sketch with every quote at no charge. For larger projects, we collaborate with landscape architects and can provide CAD drawings.
Natural stone is low-maintenance. We provide a written care guide specific to your stone type with every project. Most stonework just needs an annual inspection and occasional resealing — we can do that for you on a maintenance contract.
All structural masonry work — retaining walls, foundations, and load-bearing elements — is warranted for the life of the structure. Cosmetic and surface work carries a 10-year warranty. We stand behind everything we build.
